Malaysia's Education Ministry is mulling over a move to station police in schools.

Minister Mahdzir Khalid said the request would be made only for schools located in hot spot areas.

"The police cannot be in all the schools as we have 10,200 nationwide and it would be asking the police too much.

"What we can ask for is help from the district police stations to place an auxiliary policeman at schools located in hot spots," he told reporters in Parliament on Monday (March 5).

He said the measure would be additional security for schools, apart from closed-circuit television cameras to be installed in schools later this year.

There are 421 schools located in hot spots nationwide.

Mr Mahdzir was asked to comment on the murder of a 39-year-old man while he was waiting for his son to leave his school in Sri Serdang in Selangor last week.

The victim, G. Ganeshan, was killed by a gunman on a motorcycle.

Based on initial police investigations, the murder is likely connected to a spat among Gang 08 members and drug trafficking.

Selangor police chief Mazlan Mansor said on Sunday that the incident was an isolated case as the attackers were going for a specific target.

He said the public need not worry over the incident.

He said the attackers took advantage of the moment when the victim was waiting for his son to finish class.

He reassured the public that the police were doing everything they could to arrest the criminals involved and that they were very close to nailing the suspects.
