Various organisations in Bengaluru gathered on Thursday to protest the crackdown on the anti-Sterlite agitation that left 13 people dead after police opened fire on a crowd at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu.
Activists and members of human rights organisations gathered in front of the office of Vedanta Limited, near M.G. Road, seeking immediate action against the company.
“The government seems to be aiding companies which are plundering the environment,” said activist S. Balan, one of the protesters. The People's Union for Civil Liberties, Greenpeace, Stree Jagruti Samiti, Environmental Support Group, SDPI, New Socialist Alternative, Tamizh Makkal Aikyam, Alternative Law Forum and Karnataka Janashakti were among the organisations that lent support to the protest.
At Mysore Bank Circle, Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) held another demonstration. State committee member M.N. Sriram said, “The SUCI(C) extends its deep-felt condolences to victims of the police firing, and demands adequate compensation for the families of those killed and injured. The people of Tuticorin and surrounding villages have been demanding closure of the Sterlite company’s copper smelting unit as well as the company’s plan to expand its operations. From the start of its operations, the copper smelting unit has been polluting the air, water and environment, violating all environmental regulations.”
