Understanding the Election in Assam (Part 1)

The mainstream narrative on Assam is defined by an excessive focus on linguistic, ethnic, and religious strife, but many of the voters speak of development and economic growth, not social conflict, as the key issues in this election. The incumbent Congress government has now ruled Assam for 15 years, with Tarun Gogoi at the helm. The Congress has brought peace and stability to the region, but Assam seems to be falling behind the rest of India with regard to economic development. This is the real subtext for the voters seeking “change” in this election. For the first time in a long time the Congress is being challenged in Assam.
