Building the Foundations for Sustainable Nutrient Management

Published By: UNEP | Published Date: January, 01 , 2010

The report details how rising CO2 emissions are altering the chemical balance of our oceans and outlines the wide-ranging consequences of this emerging issue on marine food chains and ecosystems as well as human activities such as tourism and fishing. It also analyzes the effects of ocean acidification on global food security. Nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, are a key part of delivering food security and sustainable development. However, excess use and inefficient practices leads to nutrient overenrichment, causing soil acidification and groundwater pollution, harmful algal blooms and dead zones in the sea, and loss of coral and sea grass cover.
