Karnataka has a literacy rate of 75.36 % (Census 2011), with a total of 61,628 schools (UDISE 2014-15) enrolling 8.345 million students.Despite being one of the highest spenders on education, Karnataka’s literacy rate is lower than that of its neighbouring states: Maharashtra,
Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This thus points towards inefficiencies that do not allow the potential of the investments to be realised and thus emerges a need to pay greater attention to improve outcomes.
