Traditional Water Harvesting for Domestic Use: Potential and Relevance of Village Tanks in Gujarat's Desert Region

Published By: GIDR on eSS | Published Date: November, 25 , 2006

Recognising the dearth of detailed analyses of economic and environmental performance of traditional water harvesting systems (TWHS) meant exclusively for domestic use, this paper enquires into the relevance and explores possible modernisation/revival of talavas (tanks) in two villages of Gujarat's kutch district in Thar deserts-India's driest region. It analyses the pattern of water use, alternative sources and household's willingness to pay for reviving/modernising talavas.
