Bad Karma or Discrimination? Male-Female Wage Gaps among Salaried Workers in India

Published By: Centre for Development Studies | Published Date: May, 01 , 2015

This paper analyses the issue of gender parity in wages by focusing on the evolution of male-female wage gaps for an emerging economy, India, and decomposes the gaps to understand patterns of gender-based labour market discrimination. We use data from the Employment-Unemployment Schedule (EUS) of two large rounds of the National Sample Survey (NSS), viz the 55th round in 1999-00 and the 66th round in 2009-10 to explore gender wage gaps among Regular Wage/Salaried (RWS) workers and to assess where in the wage distribution are gaps higher.
