Women and Work in South Asia: Changes and Challenges

The characteristic features of the region such as the predominantly rural, agrarian economy; patriarchal stronghold; influence of traditional gender based division of labour, the time spent on domestic and care responsibilities by women influence and affect the supply of women’s labour for economic activities. Other aspects which appear to have an impact on women’s labour force participation in developing countries relate to the extent of poverty and vulnerability, low levels of literacy and poor access to economic resources.
