Uprooted Homes Uprooted Lives Key Findings of a Study on the Impact of Involuntary Resettlement on a Slum Community in Mumbai

Published By: Centre for Enquiry into Health and Allied Themes | Published Date: January, 01 , 2006

Involuntary resettlement refers to the movement of populations when the choice to remain in a place is not granted. This is distinct from voluntary population movements, including rural- urban migrations, which reflects people’s willing pursuit of new opportunities and stimulates economic growth. One such case was the slum pocket of Jari Mari, a western suburb of Mumbai, from where 2000 odd families were resettled in 2002. This study looks at the social, economic and cultural issues relating to such involuntary displacements.
